Man airlifted to hospital after 35ft cliff fall

first_imgUpdated: 1pmA man was airlifted to hospital last night after suffering a 35ft fall from a cliff in Inishowen.The man was out walking along the cliffs at Kinnego Bay at around 8.45pm on Sunday when he fell to the rocks below. The man was transported to Letterkenny University Hospital, suffering two fractures to his skull, requiring stitches and was treated for a broken wrist. The incident occurred after a party of six teenagers from Inishowen and Derry City had been rock climbing near Kinnego Bay.Two men, who had been camping at the beach, called the emergency services before assisting by kayak to the location and provided first aid to the injured casualty.The Greencastle Coast Guard was called to assist the casualty from Malin Head Coast Guard 8.50pm.  The Rescue 118 helicopter was also dispatched to the scene and landed on the beach. The Greencastle Coast Guard rescue boat arrived on scene at 9.21pm.Images via Greencastle Coast GuardThe rescue boat took three of the teenagers off the rocks and landed them to the safety of the beach, where they were checked over by a waiting ambulance crew and received medical attention for cuts, bruises and hypothermia.The rescue operation was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard.Images via Greencastle Coast GuardGreencastle Coast Guard Officer in charge, Charlie Cavanagh, said the rescue operation went smoothly and the weather conditions were favourable, allowing their rescue boat to gain access to the casualty’s location and also allowed the boat and helicopter to both make safe beach landings.
