Construction underway for teachers’ quarters in Mashabo

first_img– Regional Chairman inspects projectBy: Indrawattie NatramA teachers’ quarters is presently under construction in the Amerindian community of Mashabo in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), which will accommodate coastland teachers.Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt inspecting the constructionThe construction was budgeted for in the Region’s capital works programme after residents openly requested a location from the regional administration to house trained teachers.During a face the community meeting, parents of Mashabo told Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt that the community is left back in terms of education due to the lack of teachers at the school. After inquiries, it was revealed the school was understaffed since the area did not have accommodation for teachers.Immediately after the meeting, representation was made at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) level, by the Regional Chairman for the construction of the teachers’ quarters and hence provisions were made for the building in the Region’s budget.The construction commenced by a local contractor and according to the Region Two Chairman the work is moving apace.He however called on the Village Council of Mashabo to form a monitoring committee to oversee the project.Residents have expressed gratitude for the quarters and said it will aide in the delivery of education in the Amerindian settlement. Toshoa of the community Sylvn Rapheal expressed concerns about the fencing.Rapheal said he would like for more space to be given so that a school garden can be accommodated. The Toshoa however expressed gratitude for the building and said that often the community is left without teachers due to the lack of a facility to accommodate them.last_img
